Not sure when guys started to using FX loops. I know that I only use the Chorus, Phaser, Flange, Delay and Reverb through the FX loop but the Overdrive, Distortion, Fuzz/Octave, etc. I put those in front of the amp. Its always a bad idea to put ALL of your pedals in an FX loop if you have any OD/DIST type pedals in your chain.

That's exactly what I used to do. DD-3, Stereo Chorus, Flanger through the loop; Turbo Overdrive, Tube screamer, etc...in the front.

I'm not a master of "the loop", but that is how I thought it was supposed to be.

Well I made this thread because I was thinking on how guys in the late 70's and early 80's use to put the effects? Did Lifeson used his effects in the loop?

Not a slam, but I bet a search on Google will tell you all the answers? But I may be wrong?
But it only takes a few minutes to find out. Just sayin.

Can't say exactly when but as to why...
When we starting seeing amps with cascading gain stages to get more gain.
Putting time based effects in front of the gain stages simply sounds bad.
So the EFX loop became necessary.

Look up HA Dumble, that's one answer.
