    Default Bass players? Your thoughts?

I'm going to be joining a band as bassist. My bass amp
is a Carvin MB10- 250W with one 10 inch speaker.
I'm definitely going to need an ext. cab to be able
to cut through. I'm on a tight budget as well. Your
    recommendations are appreciated.

    +1 on that....

long story short.. I had/have a Eden cabinet with a 12" and a horn.. found a matching Eden 15" with a horn on my local CL... wow... that set up now hits real hard..!!!!!

BTW: I did have it at 4 ohms with just the 12" and also at 4 ohms with the 12 and the 15 to get MAX power out of the Eden amp...

300 watt amp that weights in about 1-1/2 pounds.. The "padded" rack case is heavier then the amp...

un-real the tone from that Eden stuff.. but wicked expensive IF you buy it new.. so buy used like I did and you are set... or just get a matching 15" like said above and I think you will move "air" and be just fine..!!!!

also if you have a "line out" to go into the PA you are set for sure with a 15" with what you already have.. or you could always just put a Mic. on it.. either way will work as you very well know..!!!!

I pretend at times to play the bass... But one thing I do know is what has been mentioned...you have to move air. The type of air that vibrates the windows in the house across the street.

I just thought of a great cabinet for ya...

Gallien Krueger or G/K makes super light stuff that also hits hard at a very cheap price.. less then the 300 for that one you posted IIRC...??????
(meaning IF you want just a single 15" as I think they also have dual 15" cabs that still weight next to nothing but hit hard and priced right..!!!! )

    BTW: great comment aceman...!!!!!

Bass players? I like 'em! A key ingredient to any good band. Think of legends like John Entwistle, John Paul Jones, John Taylor (hmmm, lots of great Johns on bass), Geddy Lee, Mike Mills of R.E.M....

    Wait, what?

Oh, you're talking to bass players, not about them?

Well, I was planning on being a bass player until I heard Eruption (not until 1986 ), but I can tell you this: You've already linked to the one I was going to suggest!

I bought it as a christmas present for the mother of my child (who also happens to be the bassist in my band - gotta love being able to bring that "bottom end" home with me after each show ) after her (very) old and (very very) heavy Ampeg 4x12 got too mushy sounding/too heavy (I was the one who always loaded/unloaded it , and all I can tell you is it blows the 4x12 away! All the power handling you need (handles her old Sunn head just fine), and that classic ampeg performance. Tight, articulate, and ballsy, it does everything she needs it to (I take care of the rest ) yet is so light it isn't even funny!

I'm sure there may be other good ones in that price range, but you can not go wrong with this Ampeg!

Thanks guys! Much appreciated. I'm considering the
Ampeg and the GK. I was in favor of a Carvin 1x15,
but it seems the one in my budget has just been
discontinued. Figures- it was USA made.

    Score!

I was going to recommend buying a woofer and making a cabinet, but it looks like you already found a sweet deal.

I think about picking up the bass from time to time but I've always been of the belief that bass is properly played with the fingers. I'm a lefty that learned to play guitar righty because that's the only thing I had at the time. So I don't have the strength in my right hand to hang in there with the finger picking.

/end of further thread derailment, on to the regularly scheduled programming...

sounds like you found a good deal.
didn't really get to chime in, but something always to consider is the tone you want. Do you want tight, more responsive tone or a more 'Woofery" tone. 15's can give you more of the "woof" sound, where 10's can be more punchy...that puts 12's right in the middle. I personally like 12's or 15's or a mix of a 2x10 with a 15. You should have a good mix with the 10 and 15.

Remeber, though, bigger is not always better, one of the best sounding cabinets I have is an SWR Henry the 8x8, it's 8, 8 inch speakers. This thing has a lower frequency response than any 2x15 or even the Ampeg 8x10 that I sold...Henry brings thunder and crashes stuff off the wall, plus it has a punch like Tyson back in the day!

Gaillen Krueger and Ampeg make up my favorite heads, and Eden does make nice stuff. MarkBass makes nice stuff, but pricey also.

PS...thats a nice amp you have there

post some pics of the other cab!
