    Default Eddie's particular Kramer

As I'm new to Kramers, I don't recognize necks or bodies easily... Could anyone tell with 100% insurance wich exact Kramer Eddie is using on this particular video please ?
    Banana Eddie
Sometimes he's got a pacer mapple neck, sometimes Baretta Like... What model do I have to chase to have this body and this neck. Not the EVH signatures, I mean the Kramer is took parts of to make this particular guitar. Very thin neck apparently.
    Thanks

    That would be his 5150...

It consists of Kramer Pacer special poplar body with tone knob filled original floyd rose and a maple neck neck with A se-metrical contour that he made....schaller tuners.....seymour duncan jb...and a kick ass paint job....

That will get you in the ball park....

If you can get a Yo 1984 reissue ( a misnomer but that's what it was called) it's real close to what he's using in the video, except these have alder for a body wood

I think the 5150 was a poplar body.... It's not for sure but that's been the consensus from what I've found and what Kramer was using at the time. Done a lot of research for my next relic...

This according to Warren and Kyle and lot's of reading....

I remember seeing this vid when it first came out....God I'm old... That's when I decided I wanted a Kramer.... I played Hamers at the time Due to Preist and Def Leppard.. That all changed.

Still have a Hamer Standard though..

Hehe thank you guys. So another newbie question : If you had to chose between this 87 JK1000 yet on eBay OR a vintage striker with 24 frets - as I can't afford a 5150 ('til someone offers an unbelievable deal haha) - I guess the 87 JK1000 would be chosen by all of you ? I truely love the swan neck and I'm actually wondering if strikers also have this smooth and dead thin contour. At least, not to far from the swans.
I'm quite sure the JK1000 neck is great for me but still wondering for the strikers neck. Again, it's amlost impossible to test kramer guitars in france, no store have any kramer left since 1988.
BTW if someone is about to sell a cool pacer special or JK1000 at affordable price, let's talk it over !
    Thanks you all.

PS : to make it short : do you think the "less than 300$" new strikers are still good guitars (already playing a swan so I don't wanna be disappointed) or is it saffer to go for the 87 JK1000.

Not sure what you mean by "vintage" 24 fret Striker. The only 24 fret Strikers you'll find are Gibson made one sold either through MusicYo or, well many places one Yo shut down. Edit: maybe "Vintage" was just a mischoice of words. Looks like you know the Strikers are newer. I can tell you this from having owned one: they are well made guitars with quality necks, but they are not going to give you an EVH sound or feel, mainly due to the quad rail pickups (very muddy for the most part, only sound good with certain settings and no good for clean sounds), the very thin, flat "Shredder" neck, and to some extent the licensed Trem (just not up to an OFR for quality and tone). A decent playing, nice looking guitar, but other than the "Kramer" name, it's really got nothing in common with EVH's 5150. That said, I can't speak for the new Strikers coming out with non-quadrail pups. Still, since I'd take any of my Foci over that Yo Striker, and since they have a very similar body shape to EVH's Pacer, and relatively close banana headstocks (unless you get a pointy), along with OFRs and decent pups (certainly better than quad rails), I'd say definitely go for the JK1000 (which was the Japan market version of the Focus 1000), unless the price gets into the $400 plus range - right now you can find a Pacer or even some Barettas for not much more than that if you're patient!

Correction, the 1984 models from Yo, while nice, were not like vintage Pacer Specials. The fretboard radius and backshape are very very different from anything Kramer/Paul would have used for the 5150 neck.

The consensus is, Paul Unkert built that neck on the 5150, along with a few other necks for Ed. In fact, he even told us at a Kramer Expo about the history of how those headstocks were made, he had an old bed headboard that he'd cut peice of wood off of because they were the exact thickness he needed. He said he had built around 5 necks for Eddie that eventually were used for the Hot For Teacher, the 5150 and other guitars. I can assure you, Eddie did not build that neck. He may have assembled that guitar, but he didn't do any woodworking on it.

When I showed Paul my 5150 I made from a real Pacer Special body and the customwoods neck I have on it, he played it for a minute and said "Yea, thats pretty damn close right there, but I would have made the backshape of the neck a little more thin for Ed." An Ernie Ball EVH/Axis is about as close as you're going to get to the real thing on the 5150 since Ernie Ball modeled that neck directly from the 5150 neck.

The jury is still out on the Poplar vs Basswood debate on the 5150. The thing is, those tonewoods are so similiar that if you do one or the other on a project, its going to sound near the same. Poplar with an old school JB, I can verify, nails VH tone with the right amp settings.

Waow that was interesting ! Thanks you for your time and experience . Ok, I begin to see clearly now. As I thought todays strikers have "almost nothing in common" with old style kramers, wich is indeed obvious. By vintage, I thought not 2010 models but you're right, older ones don't have 24 frets (those I saw on craigslist at least).
So next step : should I wait for a Baretta or Pacer custom @ fair price or the JK1000 is already a great axe not that far from a Baretta? The kind guy on eBay told me his JK's neck is thinner than a swans ! Must be something. Equivalent to a Focus.... Does it mean "kinda" cheap ?
    Thanks again for your help.
