    Default Quitting Smoking

Hey Guys, I know I haven't posted much lately but I intend to change that.

Well I just woke up coughing really bad. I currently have a cold but I know that this bad cold cough is caused by smoking as I never had it when I was not a smoker. The cough usually goes away a few days after the cold does and I'm fine again but I'm so sick of it. Just coughing my lungs up while having a cold is enough to make me think about quitting smoking.

So I decided to try another attempt to quit smoking. Just woke up so start time is 8.15am (Saturday 6th June 09) Time now currently is 8.30am. I haven't had a cigarette since 11.30pm last night.

Apparently having a cold is the best time to give up smoking...we'll see...my first attempt was when I had a cold and I only lasted 25 hours and ended up buying a packet because I ended up really cranky.

I'll try my best to not give in, but if I do...at least I gave it another try. This cough will go away eventually but when I do have another cold again I don't want to end up coughing my guts up.
    Nathan.

    Good luck buddy!

    Done that been there.

If you can make it 72 hours you can beat it. Let yourself eat anything and everything you want. Drinking leads to your next cig.

The nicorette gum helped me finally quit. It gave me something to fill the cycle. But it is a bit more expensive that smokes, but it will save you money in the long run.

Sounds like you are a heavy smoker. Doesn't matter. Just makes it a bit harder to stick with it.

People quit successfully every day. Is today your day?

Quitting Smoking?? Pure Blasphemy! What the hell are you.....Ohhhh...cigs....nevermind Never smoked one. Good luck Nathan, where ya been, bro?

Seriously, my folks were power smokers, the old man, non-filter Camels..2-3 packs/day, way back. They cut 'er down to sharing a few Winstons each day.

The first few days are the worst,as with any bad habit.

(That reminds me...I've been drinking alot lately. )

    Best of luck!!!

If that doesn't work, go out and get shit faced beyond belief, smoke like never before (adds to the post morning sickness) wake up feeling like death....then think of a smoke until it makes you want to hurl some nasty grilled food from the night before. 2 days into this and no smokes later is a great start.

Probably around 15-20 cigarettes a day, lately I've noticed I've been cutting down alot as Ive been smoking the "roll your own tobacco" (actually here we call it rollies) as paying bills and just buying a car around nearly 2 months ago kinda leaves you broke . Yesterday I probably had about 10 in total.

I do turn into a heavy smoker when I drink (I went through a pack of 30 within a few hours of buying them when I was drinking...then again I was also sharing them too). I have kind of been put off drinking anyway so that won't ever happen again.

Quiting isn't easy... I did it back in 2000. Cold turkey... Lasted for 3 years, and like a fool, one day at work, one of the guy's was smoking... I asked if I could bum one... Been back on the habit since
After the first few days, it gets pretty easy. You'll loose the urge. Just eat... eat... eat... I used jolly ranchers whenever I had the urge. That helped.
I wish you well You can do it...
I'll be going down the quitting road again. I know it

Your damn right its not easy! The first attempt I did was cold turkey and this attempt is also cold turkey. Its already been 3 hours (well actually 12 hours because I hadn't had a cigarette since 11.30pm last night) and I'm craving for a smoke now. I have a tiny bit of tobacco left which I was going to let my mate have (as he is here) but I'm so tempted to have it!

The bad cold cough that I get from smoking when I get a cold is enough for me to quit but the cough always goes away when the cold does. I wouldn't want to cough like this everytime a cold comes around, Hopefully I can last....right now I don't feel like I can and I can't get my mind of having a smoke.

I quit using the patch back in 2000. I was a 1.5-2/day smoker. Patch worked, but I also chewed a shitload of gum (think Costco/Sams cases of gum). I also would keep an unlit cig in my mouth and purposely threw away all my lighters. My friends started calling me Marlboro Man (HDMM referece ). It works, but you have to have the WILL POWER to WANT to quit. My dad has tried to quit, I guess about 5 times a year, every year. He always fails and goes back. He has emphysema and COPD.

Keep your chin up and don't let movies and other people's smoking get you. I used to walk through clouds of cig smoke and love the smell, now it gags me.......And I always swore I'd be like Denis Leary and end up with an Oxygen Tank lighting up my last......... Best of luck to you bro, we got your 6.

    Hey bro!

I know you have probably heard this before, but I'll say it again...

If I can do it, ANYBODY can! I smoked for 18 years, heavily. Quit in 2000 and never looked back.

It's not easy, but beleive me when i say that life is better without those things.

like 'bkeen' said above, after about three days it gets easier...and every day after that...a little easier...and easier...and easier...

Next thing you know, you're off 'em.

I tried smoking after about 2 months clean, and couldn't stand the things. I coughed, and then threw the pack away. Easily.

    Good luck, Slash!!!!

I just gave in! What a piss weak attempt! 13 hours.

I'm going to go to the doctors next week possibly to see if I can get a prescription of "champix". Champix worked well for mum who quit in January (it was actually my prescription of Champix that she used, I wasn't ready at the time).

Bit disappointed in myself for it. Please feel free to keep this thread open for anyone whos quitting and to give their updates. I will probably respond back to this thread again when I try again.

    Nathan,

You have to believe in yourself and you gotta want to quit. I cheated a few times during and after the patch (1 every morning for 2 weeks).....I still quit basically cold turkey after the patches ran their course.........Keep the faith brutha - I know you can do it, and so do you.

I never tried quitting since I haven't had any problems so far so I don't know how it feels, but I wish you luck

Well yeah, I can't sing those really high tones anymore, but that's also due to lack of practice.

Nathan, look at it this way. You did not smoke for 13 hours. How many smokes whould you have had in that 13 hours?

Ok, you fell off the horse now get back on and see how long you can ride this time.

Don't let yourself just say I failed and leave it at that and go back to smoking in defeat.

Ok, so now you have your nicotine fix. Now try again.

How would we ever get anywhere in life if we just gave up after the first attempt?

Do you think ED just picked up the guitar one day and started playing Cathedral? Hell no. He had to work at it over years.

Pick up your guitar when you have the urge to smoke and start ripping! If that doesn't do it, find something that will.

Anything to keep that cig out of your mouth!

So quit whining and grow a pair and get on with it!

    :happy1

    Good luck bro!

Smoking is evil. It isn't like most other things that have some bad qualities and some good qualities - they are all bad. Smoking is the enemy. All it does is break you down (even when you don't realize it).

Try working out when you get over your cold and your body will start loving you for it. I have smoked in my life but with age comes wisdom and if I had the wisdom back then that I have now I would have never smoked.
Sometimes you make a statement, and some bonehead comes in and references something that you aren't even talking about - I love that.

hey nathan.just thought i'd ad some words of encouragement. i've been smoke free for about ten years now.i smoked my whole life with a few times quitting.about 12 or 13 years ago i used the nicotine gum to help me quit. it worked well but i weened myself off the gum in about a month using regular gum.10 months into being smoke free my father died.i started smoking when i went to see his body before they took him. i said i'd never quit again.after a few years i started to not be able to afford to smoke.and so i quit again, using the gum.1st day was really rough.had a smoke after about 12 hours.then i weened myself off the gum.but i kept it around and when i got a real bad craveing to smoke i chewed the gum.last time i chewed some was when i was working and it made me so lightheaded i almost passed out.
in my expierence i had to get pissed off enough to do it. (mostly at the government). because they know how addictive it is and they raise the price. just like a drug dealer.i have since learned that they use the same process on nicotine molecules to supercharge the effect, that they do on crack cocain.anyway,i've been smoke free for about ten years now and i hate smoking.i am no longer a pawn in their nicotine game.its the best thing i ever did to quit.and it was also one of the hardest things i've done. you have to find what works for you as a thought process that helps you stay quit.
good luck and sorry for rambling

I will eventually get it right. People say that having a cold is the best time to give up smoking. I don't think it is. My 1st attempt was also done when I had a cold. When I'm not well I'm not a pleasnt person to be around when I'm sick, also the case when I haven't had a cigarette in say 6 hours.

I think I'll try again once this cold clears up. I'm confident I will do it one day, it may take a few more attempts but I know I'll get there.

I've cut down heaps since I've had a cold. I've gone down from 15-20 a day to 6-10 a day.

    Slash:
You gotta get your mind right to quit. I smoked 1- 1 1/2 packs a day, did the gum and the patch, neither worked for me , I was wearing the patch, chewing gum and smoking. One day looking at my son decided to quit, took the cigs off the mantle and threw them away. That was 14 years ago and I didn't look back, been smoke free ever since. Good luck

Try again, don't give up. I quit cold turkey on 26th of April. I have had my rough days but, each day is easier than the one before. No more coughing, headaches, smelling like an ashtray, and most of all money in my pocket. 2 pack/day for 15 years. You can do it.
