Default Schaller 1984 Zebra..what pup is it like?

I posted this in the Tone Talk section too.

I know the vintage site states that is like a Duncan Custom, but the Schaller site list the Golden 50 as a PAF with Alnico Mag. The Duncan Custom has a Ceramic Mag in it.

Can anybody tell me what the winding or DC resistancs is on the original Schaller Zebra pups that came in the 1984 Barettas?

What are the specifications..I did a search and kind find anything really abou them.

The early Schaller Golden 50s are like JBs to my ears, only with less bottom end.

The early Schaller Golden 50s are nothing like JBs to my ears

They are pretty weak actually, by todays standards. 8.5 ohms iirc.

I would say they are PAF sounding pups.

You have to beat on them to get them to bark but they have a really nice sound IMO. Back off the vol and they clean up real nice.

Depending on your body wood, if it isn't maple a JB zebra will sound better and more modern.

The schallers I really like are the 2 in 1 but they never made them in zebra...

Just goes to show. Its horses for courses. I cant think of a worse pickup than the Schaller 2 in 1.

But thats whats so cool about us guitarists.

You're right Andy, I hate the 2-in-1 too. It just sounds kind of..lifeless?

Bruce, the 2-conductor Schallers were 8.5kOhm, but the 4-conductor ones are 12 kOhm... They have a lot of output actually.

I have one in my '84 maple Baretta and all I can say is of all of my guitars it's closest to the true brown sound and has a great volume roll off. My opinion is that it sounds closest to a PAF. I don't use JB's on maple guitars so I have no idea how close they are in that situation.

    Great riffs Bruce....

I'm with you on this one...I love the hard drive of the 2in1 especially in poplar and the series/split/parallel make for a versatile single hum "highway" axe.

    Thanks guys!

Rick, been going back to my roots and doing some 70s type originals. I'm not sure they would fit in. Not shred worthy and all that....

Well these are interesting post as the vintage kramer site under electronics compares the Schaller Zebra to a Duncan Custom...which means it would have to have the power of a Ceramic Mag in it like the Duncan Custom. I pulled the mag out and somebody told me it was Alnico 5 mag.

I swapped in an A8 Mag and it really woke of the pup...it sounded fantastic but it wasn't getting the mids I wanted.

The Custom Custom was supposed to be the EVH pup. It comes with an Alnico 2 mag in it.

When I had the CC in the maple Baretta Serial #C7350. Lead sounded very buttery...was a nice sounding pup. Then I put a DD in it which is like a JB with a Ceramic Mag. It never really did sound too good.

So I put in the Schaller Zebra which I think really sounds like a PAF clone and with the A8 mag in it it screamed. But the CC with the A8 mag really blisters and I can get more some better mid tones with it.

If I do anything it would be to put the Schaller stock Alnico mag in the pup...just to have it stock. But for now the C8 is staying in. It sounds like a very modern (not vintage) sound with plenty of everything.

    Thanks

This Schaller was originally installed in...

    ...this 1984 Barretta.

I still own the pick-up, but sold the guitar back in 1998.... yes, it still kills me to this day!!!
The pick-up comes in at 8.2K and, to me, it sounds vey much like Seymour Duncan '59.
Today, it resides in my homemade, spray-painted "Bengal"- a 1982 Schecter body made from ash...

Thanks! Nope it's original....It's from Lt. Dans collection. Bought it not long after I found this place. Paid dearly for it from Jeff who got it from Dan but it's the centerpiece of my Kramer collection. It's pretty much mint....
