Default I need to repaint my bass..

As Steve and several others know, I stripped my aluminum bass down to find the wood underneath. There was a big dent on one side, unfortunately. Now, I need some advice on what finish I need to refinish it with. It's still sitting there, unpainted.

    Hey Chris,
I think black is not a bad idea but it would be good to get a polyester finish on it if possible.

Does anyone spray poly that you know.

There's a dent, so painting allows for filling and covering of that. I vote black as well, does a great covering job and is a popular original color. Other color choices are less likely to look original.

That's true. Black is classic and pretty much black is black [I want my baby back]

I'm very tempted to do that. That would be the easiest and cheapest way to go. Pink and black are also good ideas.

Depends on the depth and shape of the dent and no proximity to any glue joints as steamimg can permanently weaken glue joints. I am always circumspect about introducing moisture into a guitar body as sometimes it goes where you don't want it to. Wood is like a sponge and you may not see the results until later - after you are all done with your refinishing.

Gotta be a lefty to care about that, I guess!

Seriously though, I wouldn't consider black to be premium or my first choice, as I prefer some beautiful clear-coated wood to any painted guitar, but if it's gotta be painted, black appeals to the widest audience from a restoration standpoint. Restoration means its not original, so looking like it is original is a plus in my book.

Besides, what's more important - how it plays, feels and sounds to you - or how it looks to other people?

It was originally orange. I loved the color, but the paint job was pretty bad and maybe not original. It was already starting to chip off and bubble up. It has a thick white coat under the orange, and a big dent filled with putty on the side facing the floor. Most likely, it was dropped and refinished.
