View Full Version : Nightswan R1 Locking Nut Problem

:help Its been a very long time since I've had a Nightswan but just got started on a Nightswan project. The problem I'm having is having the right size allen keys to use on the R1 nut. Typically the allen key sizes are 2.5mm for the rear screw mounts and 3mm for the locking clamps. The problem with this R1 nut is that the rear mounting screws seem to want something smaller than 2.5mm allen key and the top locking nut clamp screws want something larger than 3mm allen key. Is this suppose to take a different set of allen keys like 2mm and 3.5mm ? And if so where can I get them because most guitar parts places only carry the 2.5mm and 3mm sets.

I don't think I've ever had a problem with different key sizes, at least not on the lockdowns...

On a somewhat related swan note, have any of you swan owners ever tightened the lockdowns after tuning only to hear that it raises the pitch of the lower strings??? That happens everytime I tune it after I change strings, and it makes it a real pain in the ass :scratchhe

Tighten them less tight? I know what you mean-U can always adapt the fine tuners on forehand (tighten those-relase after locking).

Just my 2 cents,

Remy

For what it's worth, I've seen both metric and US size threads on locking nuts, I actually busted a few reamers trying to widen the threads for my focus 4000 and gave up. Just ordered one at Ebay which had a techdrawing matching what I needed...

Called Floyd Rose (after I found out the difference), and they said it has to do with the licensed stuff. Floyd only does one size/one thread! Since this is my first Kramer (normally do my customs), this was a new thing to me too ;)

My R1 takes a different size than normal too. I didn't get mine from Tom so it's not uncommon I suppose.

The nuts that Tom is sending out are for a ProAxe. They are american not metric.

OK, then what size allen keys should I have for that R1 locking nut then ? :scratchhe

By the way, nice Nightswan Jon !! :headbang You and I have identical Nightswans. I love those sparkle midnight blue finishes. :toast

Any metal shop would be happy to meassure it...takes about 10 secs and you can immediately pick up some screws with decent size and length!

Metric on Schaller originals makes sense, since they are manufactured in Germany and we all know Germans are metric freaks ;) , or just painfully precise :thumbsup

I'll have to check mine when I get home

See, now I'm getting confused. This is a genuine Schaller made in Germany R1 nut. Jon (aka Pacer) is saying its American not Metric. And you are saying that it is Metric ? :scratchhe

:help No one knows what allen key size is for the R1 locking nut ???

The 2.5mm and 3mm allen keys all work on my other Kramers with the R2 locking nut.

I'll check too when I get home. I have a pickup case filled with 40-50 allen wrenchs normally I just dig in and search till I find one that fits. Hopefully there will be a size on the side of the wrench.

I do know all the ones I got from Tom were the same. Cuz I haven't had to search for another wrench .

edit: Jeff If there is a Harbor Freight Tool Store by you check them out for wrenchs. I bought a pack from them a few years ago that had both metric & american, it was only like $4-$5. Home depot would have allen wrench packs to just more expensive.

Its a cool place! stuff is very cheap too!
everything is made over seas so keep that in mind if you buy any power tools (Plastic gears and junk like that) I got a bench top drill press there on sale a few years ago for $32 !! Home depot was selling them for $49 different brand name but the $32 one is still running and I abuse the heck out of it :)

Rockford? isn't that near McHenry? Thats where my Pops live.

Yes, Rockford is about a 40 minute drive from McHenry. Right off I-90 expressway. ;)

here is a cool set for $9.99
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=92527

Or you can get a 10pc set of standard for 3.99
and a metics 10pc for 3.99 but for some reason the metric set isn't on the website?

Well, that's what Floyd told me themselves (really don't know about those schallers, I only own one and didn't meassure it)....and it seems to match up with all the floyd nuts I own, it's M4 for both the locking AND the mounting screws...Take it to the metal shop, and get some good quality screws that simply fit and let us know what it was :thumbsup

Yup I'm pretty sure its a 5/16" too. That one needs a nut driver.

Jeff, Mine are 3mm to lock down the pad, I couldn't read what size the mounting screw is, it was to small.

Ok 5/16th ! Cool thanks fellas.

ps. I did feel it was around 8mm's, but ...in guitar measures (see thread) nothing is certain.

Thanks Eric (KramerKiller) for your advice. :thumbsup I went to Harbor Freight Tool store here in town. I saw the T handle hex key set you were talking about. However I'm looking for something a little more portable. I found a SAE (American) hex key set there in the style of a swiss army knife type set up. Was only $6 and works great.

Here are the sizes that fit the locking nut screws for the R1 locking nut on the Nightswan I bought from Tom. 3/32" hex key for the nut mounting screws and 9/64" hex key for the locking clamps. So problem is solved, I just will not be able to install a wrench holder on the back of the Nightswan since I don't have individual allen hex keys that would fit in there. Not a really big deal though.

I could never understand why they put the wrench holders on the ProAxe cause the wrenches do not fit in them.

That worked fine on the replacement nut I bought of ebay for $10. It's not the best piece of steel, but works great. On my other nut it's simply not possible since it has had some hardening treatment and will break all HSS drills or reamers (brought it to a proffesional shop and they were impressed with the strength, not by the second cheapie).

This is the one I bought, and has the correct size for my Kramer neck:
