View Full Version : What's the Scoop on the late Hundred Series Axes?

So were the hundred series guitars as cheap as the Aerostars and Strikers? Specifically, were they plywood or actually made of real slabs o' real wood?

I read the Vintage Kramer entry, and it wasn't clear to me what they were made of. I'm assuming they were plywood?

Did a real quick search here, but couldn't find anything. (I'm sure the info is here, just didn't have time for a detailed search).

Anyone have one of these? Thoughts?

some of the early ones were solid wood but most are ply. they are kinda like the strikers

I disagree eddie, my experience has been the later models x20 are solid, with most having Floyd Pros. Kramer documentation has the x20s as having maple bodies. The Designed By Duncan pickups are meh, nothing special. I put a Custom in the bridge and a JB in the middle position and my 220 really has some growl. 3 piece neck with what look to be Gotoh tuners with Kramer caps. It's as good as the 2 focii in my herd.
I can't speak to the x10s, I only have experience with the 220, 420, and 620.

Interesting
I'm not sure on the swap over from the 10s to the 20s I thought it was 89. Even more strange that your 10 series from 89 is ply.
Just goes to show, nothing is certain when talking about Kramers. :lol

I remember we were discussing my 610 awhile back and someone said they believed it was a "paperback maple"....lighter than a "regular maple"...:scratchhe Def not ply though....and the one you ended up with Eddie is solid also:thumbsup

My 610 is solid wood, heavy as hell. Not sure what year, but I got it about the time Kramer went under. I've had the original Duncan Designed humbucker replaced with a ToneZone.

I've always wanted to snag a Hundred Series, either a 620 with the sculpted body or a 220. That dude on eBay with the cache of NOS axes really pisses me off, since he won't sell them for a reasonable price (IMO). :banghead

Floyd Pro? I thought they came with the later-model FRII?

Holzar, you about to snag one? :poke

Nah, I'm not.

But it was the dude with the NOS stuff on ebay that prompted me to ask the question. Haven't really been even remotely interested in any of his stuff ... until that blue 220 popped up.

I'm a sucker for blue. Go figure.

I realized that I didn't know anything about these axes, and the Vintage Kramer page didn't answer all of my questions, so I thought I'd see what the Kollective knew about these axes.

They are pretty cool looking to my eye.

That candy blue is nice :drool He had an ultraviolet 120 and a 420 too but I haven't seen them listed lately.
IIRC when he started listing those he had them at $485 now they are $525(one of the spreadsheet guys might know better), I guess if they don't sell for a year or so, keep upping the price or something :scratchhe
That one has a Floyd Pro as well. Different tuners than mine though, no screw mount on those.

I had that neon green one that I modded the crap out of it.

painted binding..
still a cool guitar, would have been better with no recess trem but the necks are killer

I have a 615 just like the one pictured, black with white binding. Originally it came with black hardware and a FR II, but I swapped mine out for chrome hardware and original FR a long time ago.

It's kinda beat up now from years of not being protected and sitting on a guitar stand with kids knocking it over, hitting it with stuff, etc., but it's my first guitar and I've had it since like '89 so it will be with me forever.

I love the neck, but it's got a stress crack on the back of the headstock (starts from the nut screw area) that worries me. I think the body is ply on mine, but it has always resonated well and sounded decent even with the stock pups. I've never been disappointed with it as far as sound goes.

The only two minor annoyances for me are:

1. It's a little on the heavy side.
2. The body doesn't have a forearm contour on it because of the binding, so it's not as comfy for me to play with it strapped on/standing as guitars that do have the contour. It just takes a little getting used to. These days I usually only play this one when sitting down though, so it's not really a big deal.

i've owned 2 610's, 88 & 89. both maple bodies with FR2. i'm parting the 89, which is a heavy maple. the main difference was the necks. the 88 was a striker style/feeling neck, where the 89 has the thinner focus/pacer neck. all 100 series carry striker serial numbers.

all 100 series carry striker serial numbers.

Not true, my 220 has a black cast plate, 4 digits, no prefix.

Ive honestly have been kicking around the idea of abandoning the PD quest and just get a few overseas kramers, set them up and play the hell out of them.. ply or not.:thumbsup

I'd like to come across a nuke yellow 610 or 615 one of these days for a fair price. I always loved that fluoro yellow. For the most part, it only came on the cheaper guitars...Strikers and hundred series, and a few Yo era models.

Yep, those came in the neons too, they come up a lot less often than the others. Finding a 6000 in that color would be awesome.
