I'm digging Satriani's Chickenfoot tone atm.
Dunno how to emulate it without his own gear, tho. :D

George Lynch's solo tone on the 2nd Lynch Mob album is just incredibly good. Here is one of my favorites (solo starts around 2:30):

Also, Slash's tone on the Use Your Illusion Albums, EVH's on Fair Warning, Warren Demartini's on Invasion..

Oh, just posted some ADA MP-1 suff on the recordings section. That was the kinda of sound I was shooting for but the studio guy did add a tiny bit of delay or reverb. I like it raw and dry like Jake is much of the time.

I think my favorite tones are, in relative order:
1. Richie Sambora's GIGANTIC rhythm crunch on Bon Jovi's New Jersey (which I think came via a Soldano SLO).
2. My ADA boys: Nuno on Pornograffiti; the two guitarists from Skid Row on their debut; Vitto Bratta on White Lion's first album.
3. And, don't laugh, lately I've been seriously digging Al Pitrelli's stuff with Trans-Siberian Orchestra. His lead tone is searing, warm and fat.
4. Andy Taylor (of Duran Duran fame) on his solo album Thunder and his work on the American Anthem soundtrack ("Take It Easy").
5. Paul Gilbert. He's got his thin and slightly nasily moments, tone-wise, but I really love his rhythm tone (Check out "Technical Difficulties" with Racer X).
6. All things Brian May. He's probably the one single coil guy whose tone manages to enthrall me (OK, Eric Johnson's no slouch, either). Love that hot, crunchy Vox AC 30 thing he coaxes out.
7. Last, but certainly not least, Lynch's Dokken days, specifically Under Lock and Key and "In My Dreams."
8. OK. One more: Gotta say I've been listening to a lot of Judas Priest's way overproduced Turbo album of late ... and I love it the tone KK Downing and Glen Tipton get there as well.
For me, I don't think I'm about all-out gain as much as I am that addictive Marshall-style crunch. The Mesa tone, in general, doesn't do much for me.

I had to have an ADA and got a deal on a new one back in 1991 for about $700 with the foot pedal, so I guess that's not bad??? I don't even want to talk about Mesa's prices, the only way I can do them is used but they hold up!!!

Actually it is a guitar he designed in photoshop and had Ibanez build for him a few years ago. It's a reversed modified shape based on the old Iceman. I think they did make it his sig model. They call it the "Fireman".

It's the Ibanez Paul Gilbert Sig. Actually a reverse Iceman? :-x
dumb question (cuz i know what you guys will say :D)... but is it ever possible to get a good tone sound out of a valvestate for home playing? is it possible to get an approximate sound at least? what kind of pedals or combinations do i need to make that happen?
context:
to me, my marshall valvestate 2000 head (and 1960marshall cab) on overdrive 2 gets a good sound--i'm sure it'll sound different if i were to blast it very loud--but it still feels like the sound is compressed. it's missing something... that's why i was intrigued by the fuzz universe.

It's the Ibanez Paul Gilbert Sig. Actually a reverse Iceman? :-x
I haven't played through a Valvestate but I find it hard to believe there isn't a good tone somewhere in that amp. I'm sure the all-knowing amp guys will tell you different but I have found good tones in every amp I've played.:) Thats not saying I've found the tone I want in every amp. No.:nono But if you do like Gilbert does with that pedal I think you should get close to that tone. It's a balance with light gain on the amp and more gain with the pedal. Or if you have a nice OD pedal you could use that with the cleanest setting on your amp then kick it up with the Fuzz. The options are almost endless.

dumb question (cuz i know what you guys will say :D)... but is it ever possible to get a good tone sound out of a valvestate for home playing? is it possible to get an approximate sound at least? what kind of pedals or combinations do i need to make that happen?
context:
to me, my marshall valvestate 2000 head (and 1960marshall cab) on overdrive 2 gets a good sound--i'm sure it'll sound different if i were to blast it very loud--but it still feels like the sound is compressed. it's missing something... that's why i was intrigued by the fuzz universe.
well, dont know it this will help but you can try knocking back the treble a little tiny bit, and lowering the gain on the amp and push it with a pedal.
It seems to work well with SS amplifiers. and you have to remember, if its a marshall, it will sound like like one because they are certainly not going to model any other companys tone right?
I like all marshall amps. Ive had an 800,900, mosfet, valvestate, even that big power amp and the mosfet and that valvestate sounded just as good as the tube heads.. but its personal preference really;)

WOW that sounds cocky! :D
I don't know if I can lock in on ONE favorite - the VH1 "brown sound", early AC/DC "straight-to-a-Marshall", Gilmore's "moaning Strat" tones, Townsend's SG Special, dirty ZZ Top, Keef's fuzzy Fender riffs, Lindsey Buckingham's weird guitar and playing style, Jimmy Page's chunky LP...I even dig Jack White's super-distorted POS guitars...I guess it's just like potato chips...I can't have just one.
ALTHOUGH...if we go with one sound, not one person, I guess I could say I like the older-school "dirtier" rock tones - analog, more "live" sounding, slightly fuzzy to kinda dirty without being completely distorted like the heaviest metal. As much as we all love gear and tone-tweaking toys, some of the best seem to come from instrument -> amp layouts without a lot between or in addition to...

I suggest placing an eq pedal somewhere in the chain and experiment.
I also have a fender super champ xd. That's a hybrid amp--with programmed voicings and also tubes.
The sound of the flextone doesn't have the little nuances of a tube amp and doesn't sound as forceful, and I would say lacks some clarity compared to a tube amp. However, I can get some kick ass sounds out of it and it does sound comparatively warm.

Yep, Black and Blue has the nastiest, raunchiest, sickest variant of the EVH tone. It sounds amazing...OU812 was overall an uneven record that lacked much new spark from EVH, IMO, but that tone on Black and Blue (and Sucker in a Three Piece - particularly that kickass intro) is mind blowing! :bananahea :notworthy

I think for me it would have to be EVH's tone on VH1 (also love his tone on Fair Warning in particular), along with Nuno's ADA MP1 on Pornograffiti and also that on the first side of III Sides to Every Story (the lead sounds especially on Warheads and Rest in Peace, done with a small Gallien Krueger if I remember rightly, while the rhythm tone was a Soldano SLO). Jake's tone on Voodoo Highway by Badlands is right up there, as is every tone George Lynch gets on Wicked Sensation. Also, John Petrucci's tones on Metropolis Part II: Scenes from a Memory (Mesa Mark IIC+).
nice casey. :thumbsup

My faves are Randy's tone on "Tribute", Vai in "For the love of god" and Yngwie's first two records.
One piece of advice when searching for a great tone: less is more. It should sound good for the mix, not for your ears when playing alone. That's totally different. Most guys I know would hate the sound actually used by our "idols" due to it being too "weak" and missing that over-the-top distortion and excessive bass/highs.
Serj I know your pretty good at getting a decent tone, and i know for a large part you play shall we say a "heavier" genre of rock :D Any chance you could throw up a fat lead tone for some 80's rock? Maybe in a youtube video of your gear and settings?

Well I surely could, but what I think is good might as well totally suck for the next guy :)
Here's an older example (nevermind my bad "singing", it's jut a pilot track :)):
<embed src="http://www.ebaumsworld.com/mediaplayer.swf" allowScriptAccess="always" flashvars="pageurl=http://www.ebaumsworld.com/audio/play/80926479&file=http://media.ebaumsworld.com/mediaFiles/audio/1037135/80926479.mp3&mediaid=80926479&title=Murder in Ecstacy - "Misery" demo&tags=&description=My new demo for the upcoming album. This is just a rough homemade mix, me instead of our singer and with improvized solo, but you get the picture.&displayheight=325&backcolor=0x0d0d0d&lightoclor=0x336699&frontcolor=0xcccccc&image=http://media.ebaumsworld.com/img/audio.gif&username=xxxyyyxxxyyyxxx" wmode="transparent" loop="false" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="425" height="345" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" />
That's 80's Mesa sound of sorts. You could not stand it longer than five minutes when playing alone at home, the highs and mids feel razor sharp and that "chugga chugga" thump won't work at all. But as you can see, it sounds great in the mix.
Basically it's easy to get a good sound, let's just compare it to a "kewl metal kidz" settings (order: gain, bass, mids, highs, recti as an example):
koolkidz: 10, 9, 1, 8, result: mighty sound when playing alone but total crap for the band/mix since the guitar will not really cut through but it will kill the bass and drums thoroughly
me: 5,6,5,7, result: playing alone not much fun since it sounds too much in-your-face and thin in bass area, but it will be killer live/in the studio.
Just take away the bass until the sound STOPS thumping and it starts sounding as if it lacks bass. Then give it lots of mids and fairly lots of highs and reduce the gain till it starts sounding just a bit too weak. That way your guitar will cut through every mix and combined with a band it'll sound huge.
It's a bit different with Marshalls and some others, depending on the eq layout but in most cases adding mids and reducing bass and gain will get you a huge step closer to a great guitar sound.
Mac: BTW I recently switched to Boss GT-10 and now I'm doing everything with it. In hours-long direct comparison with Pod Hd, Digitech RP1000 and Zoom 9.2tt it was literally another level of goodness in every way. Killer device once you get the hang of it :thumbsup

Personally this is probably the best tone I've heard from him, he often sound too bland and muddy into those Cornford amps IMO, here he is using a CAA and sounds killer.
Andy Woods solo at the end RIPS as well.
