Ok, so I've needed a new amp for a while. My little 5 watt Champ 600 with its 6in speaker just hasn't been cutting it for me. I wanted something with a bigger speaker.....ok I'll be honest I want a Marshall tube amp :D
I have a chance to purchase a JCM 800 2x12 combo locally, the guy got back to me and its in really good condition but living in an apartment that's a bit of a joke! Then I remembered Marshall has a little 5 watt'er they recently released, the Class 5 made in the UK. I was in the store today asking about it and the price and they said $469CDN and they have one on order. So tomorrow I'll go there and order my own, I think 5 watts with a 10in Celestion is perfect for my situation. This video pretty much had me sold especially when they hooked it up to the 4x12 cab.

That is pretty cool and it sounded amazing! If you really wanted the 800 though you could get it. I have a halfstack and I live in a house where my family hates it if I get it too loud and I am in just a little room but I can get it sounding great and volumes that only you would be able to hear it in your room, so I bet you could get even better with the combo! Any Marshall rocks though!

The Class 5 isn't a Master Volume amp. You would be better going with something with a MV for an appartment setup.
Nice amp though.
Check out the Marshall Haze 15 (http://www.marshallamps.com/marshall_theatre_popup.asp?clipCat=Haze).

Yea, no preamp control. You'd have to crank it to get it to distort much. I thought about getting one and using a stomp box in front to overdrive it at a lower volume.
But otherwise I like my Blackstar:headbang

Yea I'm gonna go the stompbox route on lower volumes, and use it as a boost when playing louder. I'm already doing that now with my current amp. That's the only negative I have against the amp, no preamp control but its alright. I can play it cranked in my friends basement who also happens to play bass so that should be fun.

Maybe a silly and totally off-topic question, but what song is that riff from in the very beginning of the video, during the first few seconds? I know it, but it's driving me nuts trying to figure out what it is.
Im with bruce on this one the MV is your best bet :thumbsup

Nope I don't know the song sorry.
On another note it seems like these are tough to find right now, backordered and gonna have to wait about 3 weeks before it arrives. No problem though :thumbsup
Edit:
Write a message on his youtube page asking him, he response to them
While 5 watts is still very loud(too loud for an apt.). The class 5 has a headphone out that bypasses the 10" speaker in it. You can actually plug a 4x12 or any other cab into the headphone out jack & still crank the volume. Volume is greatly reduced this way and it wont hurt the amp a bit! You still get the overdriven sound of the pushed amp but at lower volume. I dont know exactly how much lower but I'd imagine it would be managable.
Here's an example:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/t7RyM8ck8_k&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/t7RyM8ck8_k&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

If true about not hurting amp by hooking cab up to headphone jack (I don't know so I can't say). You could put a jack (maybe a George L easier to change back)on the 10 and run that in the phones little lower vol more gain??

Usually the headphone out trick isn't an option with a tube amp. But the way the output transformer is designed on the Class 5 allows it. I read a comment by the guy who designed this at Marshall stating that to use the headphone out as a speaker out was fine...
I'm sure you could simply put a jack on the internal 10" Celestian without a problem. I personally have never cared for the sound of 10" speakers myself though. Especially in an open back cab like a combo.

I wonder how many will get fried by people not understanding how this works. :D
The biggest negative to this amp is that you do not have control over the tone to volume aspect. If you watch the demos, this amps drive is very dependant on the volume. So you have to live with the volume your tone is at. I guess you could use a soak although that does rob performance.
Still an awesome amp!

Get the 800, i've played those newer cheap marshalls like the haze and stuff...They are junk compared to what they used to put out. You get what you pay for

An 800 or a Class 5. How does one come up with that combo? :scratchhe

I have had 800s in an apartment BITD. Can't even get the preamp tubes glowing in that situation. Even with a soak.
For a quiet Marshall, I use my JMP-1 preamp. It rocks for headphone playing with real Marshal tube tone.
The Class 5 is an all together different amp than the Haze series. Although, yes, the Class 5 and the Haze have cheesy face plates and back panels reminiscent of Chinese garbage.
But the Class 5 and the Haze 40 are great sounding amps. The Haze 15 just doesn't do it for me with the 6V6 tubes. They are great in the Fender Champs for Fender tones but not Marshall Tone...
IMO!

Just to let you know the Class 5 is actually made in the UK. I like the Class 5. But then again I like 5 watt amps.:thumbsup

I believe they are assembled in the UK. I can't imagine they could manufacture all the components and assemble them in the UK for $399.
I know they are saying they are made in the UK just like Kramer took esp parts and assembled them in the US and said they were US made....
We will have to wait for the next typhoon to see if it slows down the Class 5 production schedule... ;) :D

Yea :D I'm asking myself the same question.
I've known about the Class 5 since September and knew I needed an amp, it started when I saw a JCM 800 2x12 in my area but the guy hasn't been returning my emails anymore so I think he's already sold it. I dunno, I guess I figured a 2x12 would be overkill for my situation then I remembered the Class 5, looked into it again and decided on that.
Yea I don't believe its all UK made especially for that price but then a few years ago I worked part-time at a Lexus SUV plant and found out some of the more important parts for that car including the electronics were made in Mexico and had quality issues sooo, I guess you can't be picky nowadays.

I got it from Long & Mcquade, Canada's equivalent to Guitar Center. First one to arrive at that store and gone :thumbsup They've had it on order for well over a month. 2 weeks ago or so I went in there and put a deposit on the current order. Tough to find, I got lucky.

You mean you don't see any furniture in either the pictures or the video? :D Never noticed that, I guess...hmm I dunno I didn't plan on that but trust me its there. Its a BIG room. There's a lot of stuff in here, you just saw the empty spots :P

Man, that thing is sweet! Looks cool!:thumbsup You are going to have a blast experimenting with that thing. Amps like that (and my modded VJrs) are a bit different than most other amps you've propbably used before. Its a trick to find that certain overdrive or distortion sound at different volumes. But its worth the effort.:thumbsup I would love some vids on that soon!:) I bet that amp loves pedals! I know I do.

Looks, and sounds, great :thumbsup
Must ask though, are you playing slower or is the video? I thought it seemed slowed down a fair bit.

12-12-2009, 05:10 PM
Umm, yea I am playing slower. Was just trying to let the amp be heard, instead of my mediocre playing...if that makes sense :D
