View Full Version : 250g gutshots - need some help

Since I got this 250g I've had some questions. I had a 250g back in 78/79/80ish and I didn't have the same issues.

#1. the bridge pickup has about 1/2 the volume of the neck pickup (even when adjusted closer to the strings).

#2. as stated in another thread - when I roll the tone control to the full "bass" position - it cuts the bridge pickup to almost off.

So I decided to "take a look under the hood".

Mind you - I know a bit about electronics - I build my own pedals - do a bit of rehousing for other people - I know which end of the soldering iron is which. :thumbsup

What I'm looking for is anyone who has pics of their 250g guts - or is willing to take theirs apart and take some pics.

So - how much will I devalue the guitar if I decide to go with new pots, caps etc. ie: do a complete re-wire.

Note one of the pots has a clipped/broken lead.

Are the enclosed pots stock ?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Dan

I don't think those pots are original (made in Mexico?), all the pots I've seen on Lumies are CTS pots, so you won't be de-valuing it by changing them out. I just re-strung my 250G, but if nobody else has a gut shot for you I'll go ahead and peel her open for some pics.

those pots arent original

whoever did that wiring was a tard

don't worry about devaluing the axe by changing out the pots

Thanks for the verification.

Tonight I'm going to remove everything and see what I can salvage.

If I can get a wiring shot of someone elses I'll be good to go.

Thanks Again, Dan

The switch contacts can also interfere with output if they build up a little oxide. Try slipping a small piece of emory in between for a light polish on the contacts. Also make sure they are getting enough tension for good contact.

Judging by your workbench, it looks like you do this full time. It's always nice to have a pro on-board. Post some pics when you're done. :)

Here's a pic of my 250g, cap has been replaced at some point. The cap on your guitar is probably original, but I don't think the treble bleed should be there

the two orange drops are definitely original

really? I've never seen a lumie with a treble bleed cap, and I certainly wouldn't expect a treble bleed on a single coil guitar with 500K pots (the original CTS pots were always 500K AFAIK, even on the 250G/350G)

Edit: O.K. I'm an idiot, there's a treble bleed in the picture I posted. Don't think it's original though

ooooo!!

and this is my 25th post ! - now I can get to the for sale section !..........it could get ugly !!

Anyhow- back to the task - I'd dig seeing a stocker with the orange drops in place. My question as to pot values has been answered.

Thanks Again, Dan

Bad news this afternoon......

Looks like I've got a DOA bridge pickup.

On a whim I decided to put the multimeter to the pups to see what I had. I get 4.9ohms out of the neck pup and no reading - open circuit on the bridge.

crap. Like how often does a pickup like this come up for sale... What's the string spacing on these things ? if nothing else I suppose I could have a new pickguard made.

<sigh>

pup's don't come up very often sadly, just a shame that rewinding can be so expensive

I'll still take any stock gutshots anyone can provide.

I'll find a pickup eventually - and I want to have a stock assembly to drop back in.

I the meantime - as stated - I may have a new guard cut - and put in some P-90's or lipsticks...

you could swith the neck pick up with the bridge if you are like me and don't play the neck pick that much, if at all.

lostinthemasses

but the neck pickup is going to be voiced for the neck

i guess it's worth a shot

Sent my pickup off to Sheptone today to be repaired. He seems very confident that he can make it right.

Since the neck came out to 4.9ohms I'll probably have him wind this one a smidge bit hotter.

Interesting pictures.
I've looked high and low for those ITW caps (the.001 treble bleed cap) - no luck yet.

Someone said earlier that Orange drops were stock ?

If anyone else wants to post up their 250 innards - it'd be cool to note differences.

Thanks Again Everyone !

I'm not sure if the op needs a new pickup. I quickly skimmed the thread and saw some mentions of pickups and I had just seen this one on ebay today. Thought somebody would be interested in it.

I saw it and got all fired up - for about a second. Two things - #1 - I don't see any wiring leads on the thing - not quite sure what happened there and #2 - no mountng tabs/ears for a 250G. My pickup is off to anther winder to look at - Sheptone didn't feel that he could "un-epoxy" it so he sent it back.

guy from France contacted me today - he has two pup's from his 250G. He sent pics - they look nice. Problem is - he said that it would be approx. 35$ to ship from France :scratchhe

seems kind of steep...plus whatever he wants for them.....may be out of my range......
