He speaks the truth! I was blown away with mine, too. Completely digging the crunchy tubey tones, not to mention that HUGE chorus.
Then threw a BBE in the chain. WOW!:yikes It completely came to life. Amazing.
Have fun, man!:toast :thumbsup

Yeah but try to get a tube power amp some decent cabinets if you can. I used mine with a solid state amp for awhile before trying an ADA power amp with it. Big difference. :yikes
which BBE sonic maximizer is the 1 to get ?
there seems like a whole bunch of different models out there ?:thumbsup

They basically all do the same thing. Some are dual channel, etc. Really depends on if you are going to go stereo. With racks, my motto is to "plan for tomorrow". Get a stereo one if you can so you are ready if/when the time comes. I'm using a 482i. There are TONS of them and the others on the used market.
Like Master Pimpdaddy Steve said, go all tube soon as you can. That will be your biggest expense. Then find an effects unit, an eq and a compressor...all can be had used for low coinage.

Welcome to the club :toast
As everyone has said, grab a BBE. You'll be in for a surprise:) I was using a 422a (old BBE) until it gave up the ghost :-x So in my search, I ended up going new, and bought the 362. But look around, there are plenty of used BBE's out there. All different versions, but try and find one that is stereo. Even if you can't run stereo for the time being, as Chris said, plan for the future :thumbsup
Looks of great poweramps out there as well, and most are dual channel. I really like the Peavey Classic 50/50. But the Mosvalve, the Classic 60/60, and the Ada power amps can be found reasonably priced and will work great as well :thumbsup
For cabinets, I downsized, and went with two of the Blackheart 1x12 cabs. Budget cabs, but have decent Eminence speakers, and sound pretty good... Not quite like a 4x12, but a whole lot easier to transport :)
Congrats on the new Mp1 and enjoy it :thumbsup :thumbsup
yah... I looked on craigslist and found a few bbe sonic maximizers, and an e-mail sent to all of them !
I gotta do this on a budget hehe.... cause all the rack stuff I've seen on craiglist that has passed me by was cheap ! so it will be a work in progress. also gonna dump some stuff. anyone want a epi t-bird bass with case and a randall rg75 g3 hehe
this is the total opposite of what is was gonna buy !
I was gonna get rid of my Randall and buy a Blackstar ht-5 combo hehe.... oh well:toast

The MP-1's are great, so long as you can hold a solder iron carrying out the battery socket mod is worth doing next time you need to change the battery out. As you'll soon discover the BBE will truly lift the bass & treble.

Ray - you will find this to be an awesome preamp. I've been an ADA player since '88 - my original from then is the bottom unit in this rack.

So I've always wanted to know if the ADA MP-1 is easy to use?
Are the presets good or do you have to do deep programming to get the good sounds out of it?
Pacer Guy

The Mp1 is very user friendly :thumbsup The stock presets are pretty good.
It basically the same as using an amp, but with more channels than you will know what to do with :)
There is OD1-OD2-Master-Bass-Mid-Treble-Presence. So instead of turning a knob, you press the button that corresponds to what you want to adjust after pushing the edit button, and then use the up-down buttons to adjust, once done, press the store button, and whichever number you want to assign to the preset (up to 128) :thumbsup pretty simple.
The rest of the buttons are for the effects loop (can be turned on/off for each preset) the Chorus Depth (which is also doubles as a notch filter, when the rate is set to zero) and Rate. They are also used for the Midi functions as well. Then there is the Voicing button to select tube distortion-tube clean and solid state.
One of the easier preamps I have used :headbang

MP-1 3TM.......The holy grail.........I rotated alot in and out before I got to this rack and it's perfect. Some guys say they need tubes in the power amp. I've played mine through a Mesa and VHT.....Sound good great even but I'm happy as hell with a TubeWorks 962 or an 1160 as in the picture. Warms up the 3TM without overpowering it.......:thumbsup I guess with a little stock MP-1 a tube power amp might be needed......:D I use a compressor sometimes too but the 3TM has great sustain........Go with a 482i maximizer as mentioned. Two complete processors for stereo...:thumbsup An EQ helps for low end at low volumes......

Anyone know the difference between an ADA MP-1 and an ADA MP-1 Classic?
Pacer Guy
04-03-2009, 07:47 PM
Ohh.. A classic?? Nice :thumbsup The classic has the added Brown voicing :) Stereo effects loop, recording outs with selectable cab voicing and a noise gate :thumbsup
There pretty sweet, and a lot of people prefer the Classic over the original.
I'd take one... Love to use a Classic, along with the original :)

Can you all tell me if these would sound good plugged directly into a Delta 44 soundcard and ProTools? I'm always looking for a direct-in alternative to mic'ing amps.

Heem, you can use the headphone out jack (it has a simulated cab) to go into the soundcard. Works pretty good, but the ideal is either the Mp1 Classic, Mp2 or the Ada Microcab along with the Mp1 for recording :thumbsup

Congrats ^^^^^^ Sounds like your down to the last piece. I wouldn't worry to much about going Stereo, just nice to have the stuff that will let you do it when the time comes. The Crate cab should be nice with a Greenback in it :thumbsup
Good luck on the poweramp hunt... Should be something out there :thumbsup
ok... I been looking all over for a power amp with much luck !
The best so far I've found is a tubeworks Mosvalve 962 for $200 these seem pretty solid !
Its really overkill for what what I'm gonna run it thru hehe, my little 1 12 cab with a green back
I was really looking for something with alittle less wattage, but seeing what they go for on E-bay I guess I'll buy it and if something else comes up I atleast won't lose $
your thoughts on the mosvalve are appreciated !!!

Alrighty then fellers,
Looks like I'm about to be in the club. A guy at sevenstring.org has an MP-1 (asking $200) and I'm trading my well used pedalboard (SKB-PS-15), a Morley Bad Horsie Wah and a Boss TU-2 tuner for his ADA MP-1 and a Sabine RT-1600 tuner (Sabine is prob crap, but will do for now...) Can't wait.
I'm probably going to sell my Peavey 4x10 to fund a tube power amp and/or a cab. I have a line on a BBE for a good price, all I need now is a Furman, and a multi-effects unit. Eventually I'll get a TC Electronics G-Major or whatever. For now I still have my GT-8.
I'm aiming to go somewhere like in this thread:

That 962 TubeWorks is a great stereo power amp... I've been through lots of PA's and the 1160 I just sold Gary and the 962 I'm using now are ultra clean with just the right amount of warming. Perfect for an MP-1 which I use exclusively. The only other power amp I'd even consider using at this point is a VHT which I'm going to buy but I'll still use my 962 as well. Tube power amps are over rated as far as I'm concerned. Most of your distortion (at least what I want) comes from the pre-amp and the break up of the speakers. There are few times you will ever see or hear the benefit of the power amps break up. A pure tube power amp ripped to breaking will tear the roof off of most small venue's before I would ever hear the benefit of one against an early MosValve. Butler knows his shit and those early 962's do just what they are supposed to...... Crank huge sound, clean with a cut in the top...... But I have to admit VHT breaks the mold, they break up at a lower volume and are the best available. But you pay for em. BTW.....Stereo DOES MATTER!!! You will never go back once you go total stereo... But it has to be system wide....

as a FYI.. that switch on top does something.. one way is for a power amp.. the other way is for running into a guitar amp.. MAKE SURE you have yours in the correct position..!!!!!
also.. if you have rack rash and it is bothering you.. you can "flip" the bottom inside for the top outside.. and so forth..!!!! <---I hope that last one made since..??? ;)
and + whatever on the BBE..!!! :thumbsup

Might br joining the MP1 club, but I have a question on the BBE, where does it go in the rack? before or after the preamp?
Pacer Guy
08-13-2009, 08:54 PM
I would recommend after the Mp1 and any other effects. Basically last in line before the poweramp :thumbsup That seems to work well and is a pretty popular way to go :)
If you look at mine, it's the last in the signal path from the guitar.
