My first Gibson, as my first guitar was a 1990 Epiphone Sunburst LP, and I think that she's a beauty!

I'm down w/the EMG/ZW Tone. Fortunately, I also picked up a 1982 Gibson Les Paul XR-1 that will have the Gibson Pickups for that classic tone. I'll have to post pics of it when it's where I want it to be visually. :thumbsup
It's a great playing guitar and sounds BADASS plugged into my JMP 2x12! Super smooth neck, both the back profile and the fretboard.

Give me the low down on the 18 Volts Bro???
Get three battery clips from the electrical supply place and two brand new 9 volt batteries. Solder them red to black red to black until they look like this:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/mgollihur/emg3.gif
Then clip the one 'free clip' to the one in the guitar that would normally (and probably does right now) have a battery in it. Presto. You now have a convertible 18 volt mod without changing anything on the guitar.
Here's EMG's info about it:
http://main.dodgenet.com/~partsbook/SpectorEMG18VVMC.pdf
It started out as a thing that bass players did but guitar players started doing it a few years ago too. The EMGs automatically recognize the voltage and BANG!! Instant headroom!! I did it on a pair of 81s in an EC 400.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v425/smorgdonkey/ESP/EC400closeangle.jpg
Here's a shot of inside the control cavity to see how I 'found room' for the batteries:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v425/smorgdonkey/ESP/controlcavity.jpg
I covered the metal cases of the batteries with electrical tape because I was paranoid about shorting anything out with them and I ran the leads through the existing wiring channel so that when you open the battery port all you see is two clips snapped together.

Thank you. I'll have to see what it's got set up in it when it arrives on Thursday, as I had played it locally, it sold to someone in Maryland via internet before I could buy it and now it's coming back to Colorado.
Mod sounds pretty cool. I'll have to see if I can find any sound clips on the net. Thanks for the info and photos.
NICE GUITAR BY THE WAY!

but I let it go due to a Funky Non Pro Refinish and the "I don't think there was any damage to the neck/headstock/etc as far as I know" part of the deal...it was tempting...it was cheap...but it wasn't meant to be. Oh well...there will be another one I'm sure.
smorgdonkey
03-11-2008, 01:30 PM
Don't worry about finding sound clips on the net. The clips will cost a couple of dollars and then the cost of two batteries isn't significant...you can test it A/B for yourself.
In my case I had a buddy playing the guitar and then we'd hit the 'standby' switch, quickly snap out the battery, snap in the 18 volt daisy chain, hit 'standby' again and he'd wail away again...we just left the batteries dangling while we A/B'd the thing...it was nice to be able to hear them back to back with only about 10-15 seconds between samples.
More clarity and power with the 18 volts. Clearly a big advantage!! A Gibby with that much oooomph!!? Look out.

sorry to walk on your thread Muttz,
but i need to ask Smorg if that 18 volt trick will work on all active EMG pick ups?
oh yeah sweet LP man i have a question about that too. ive noticed on some LP's there is an inlay on the first frett and on others there isnt? why is that?

but i need to ask Smorg if that 18 volt trick will work on all active EMG pick ups?
Yes...all active EMG pickups...let 'er roll!! You'll love the results!! The only problem is that some guitars don't have the space for the extra battery. I don't know about other brands of active pickups as I have no experience with them. I had heard a lot about the 18 volt mod prior to doing it myself and it seems so simple and all...that's why I did it myself and now I can at least offer up the info to people and tell them "yes I have done this personally".
My advice: Rock the 18 volt mod.

I tell you...I've toyed w/buying a "REAL" Les Paul for a long...long time...and I've picked up and played a hundred of them looking for one that I really felt was a "monster"...that one special guitar...hell they cost an arm and a leg so you better be happy w/the one you pick...but this one weighed significantly more than any of the newer ones I've played...the neck was smooth as hell on back and the fretboard term that came to mind was "fretless wonder"...now add in the EMGS and plug it into a Marshall DSL (in the store it was in...I have a '79 JMP 2x12 w/6550s and Celestion Greenbacks) and it was pure SONIC HEAVEN!

Customs have the first fret inlay, the rest don't.
Hey, does your red flip flop?
:thumbsup
muttznmongrelz
03-11-2008, 09:51 PM
I'm really psyched to get it in my hands again. No...no flip flop. It's listed as Candy Apple Red...but it's diff than Kramer CAR...lighter. I've done all kinds of research on eBay and the web and can't find out what series it is...it was suggested it was a Gem Series...but they were all P90 equipped.
So...I suppose it'll be the "Muttznmongrelz" series. Kind of makes up for the loss of my Non Serial 1986 Pink Stagemaster a couple of years ago due to hard times...but at least that one went to a good home (John Maden).

03-11-2008, 09:58 PM
There was a showcase series that came in car but they had stickers on the back of the headstock that said showcase series.
:thumbsup
muttznmongrelz
03-12-2008, 12:53 PM
I'll have to research the Showcase Series. Based on what I've found...Gibson was doing a lot of "one offs" at the time and was starting to produce their "Pre-Reissues" around this time. I have seen a Limited Edition Run of about 200 C.A.R. LPs but they're all numbered below the "Made In USA" on the back of the headstock, this one isn't. Probably just a "Custom Color" Order. Whatever it is...I'm happy with it.

Not to beat a dead horse but I did the 18v mod also, yes you can do it with all active EMG's it does sound good IMHO and it doesn't void anything b/c it's actually on the EMG website and they say you can actually run 3 batteries safely for 27v but the difference between 18v and 27v is nominal. Have fun with it! :):headbang

Awesome guitar DW, agreed completely on the 18V mod, and I'm liking the finetuning tailpiece too! Get a "locking nut" for the headstock and you're all set!

Fett & George.
George - That's an interesting device. I did a bunch of research on the Gibson TP-6 and every darn review was glowingly positive and stated that it "added sustain".
I'd really like to just add some Schaller Locking Tuners and be done!
muttznmongrelz
05-12-2010, 08:27 AM
The TP-6 added immediately noticeable note clarity, definition and better sustain!!!
If your Paul is muddy or you struggle w/hearing individual notes....the TP-6 Fine Tuning Bridge is your answer! :thumbsup
