View Full Version : How to fight the guitar addiction?

Once again I bought two guitars and two necks just because I couldn't resist. My bank account isn't very happy about it either. So a stupid question:

How do you stop yourself from buying guitars/parts which you definitely don't need right now (except for your wife standing behind you with a baseball bat, of course ;))? I mean the situation where you know that there's not much money left at the bank and you know you shouldn't do it but you still can't resist.

If you find a good solution to this problem, please let me know. I'm in the same boat.
You want to know the strange part? Just the other day I was thinking how I missed the days when I only had one or two to choose from to play. :scratchhe Seems like I just don't get as familiar with or attached to any of them now.
Not that that's going to stop me from G.A.S.ing again anytime soon! :D

My solution is that I only use funds raised by myself with sales or trade....takes a bit longer but it does stimulate you more to raise those funds and it's fun too :headbang

I only get new gear when I really need it, it's tempting sometimes to leave that moto behind, but it works. :thumbsup

When I'm feeling the urge to buy anything and everything I want, I pick up more shifts at the hospital. This way I have the money, but I don't have the time to think about it!

Now this is can sympathise with so let me give you advice (even though im unmarried and 17)

In U.S money i owe my dad over 300 dollars because of ONE THING............... EBAY!!!!! this is because of my obsession with guitars......... i have 12 :-x so what ive done is look at guitars and test them through amps but then think HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY OWN GUITAR??? with the minimal of spending........ i improved my yo sustainer yesterday by putting another floyd rose on from one of my older guitars......... the action is lower and the tone is clearer STUPID KRAMER LICENCED FLOYDS!

Another thing is......... when you look at what you want really analyse it and not like me for 5 minutes thinking "this guitar is awesome its 80's it drewls hair rock" ive done that decision making with 3 of my guitars A LIGHTNING BOLT KAMAN was the most rushed it had all lightning bolts a bit like the nightswan in gold glitter all over it, actually it aint that bad but the KMD trem sucks!.

I had a bad accident with my very first kramer neck a kramer XL 2 neck the headstock snapped in half so now.......... its the doorknob to my bedroom!.

Another thing i suggest bud is thatsave money not so that your bank balance feels better but so you can review what your going to buy and buy later dsay in 6 months................ this time last year i was so set on getting a jackson soloist.......... a bought the thinnest neck jackson available in its history....... the jdx/jdr 1994 and now ive got a trapped nerve in my arm so i cant play guitar for 1 week properly! thats really put me off the jacksons!!!!!......

Another thing is to me especially what a guitar promises you in your head might not be actually what it delivers............ e.g. The now famous on the forum scratched to high hell yo sustainer......... i was really really hyped about it BIG STYLE! i actually hardly revised for my exams and when it came i went into a state of depression......... what was in my head was far from the reality!.

Also another thing just because it may seem "new" to you at the shop as like entering a while new course and road in your guitar playing doesnt mean it is........... my main axe is a fender neck thru showmaster what my dad bought me last xmas I THOUGHT I WOULDNT HAVE NO USE FOR IT......... BUT NOW ITS MORE USED THAN MY MIDDLE END JACKSONS, PEAVEYS, WASHBURNS ETCCCC............ just because its a name doesnt mean it deserves to give a set of standards!!!!!!................... e.g. erm.......... Sony and Walkman for example! :bong

Anoher thing that forces me to buy an instrument is when your in the shop....... the smell........... the sounds.......... the shinyness .............. its like mcdonalds for an obese person but this is wood and a bank balance!!!!!!........ like me bud ive had to stop...... however you can see that over many posts im reflecting on what my next purchase is WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY before i make it and not :drool everytime i see a "kramer american" a good bit of advicr sumrnitz gave me "kramers are good but arent magicial"

Hope that helps bud i may be young and not have a wife but hopefully i can still help! ;)

I'm gonna sell all of mine to see if it makes me feel better. Figure it'll be a one day auction with a clean BIN #. Then, probably get one of those Harmony Frankies that Sumr tracked down last weekend and just stay off of daBay and not look in the klassifieds.... If I start getting urges after that, Amerturk has found an in-patient program for Kramer Guitards and.... oh....wait a minute....did'nt he just snag another kramer on craiglist??? :scratchhe

I fight my addiction in the easiest way possible. I keep my self so poor I cant afford to care for my one baby. Strings one or twice a year maybe a good oiling every couple months and thuro wiping when needed.

Its easy to learn to deal when you have no cards. F*n credit cards will get you in trouble anyway. If I did get one I would probely have to set the parental controls to lock out ebay, close my eyes and pick a password that I would need weeks to hack.

The best way to fight your addiction is to have kids. (they are the reason Im broke all the time)
Just feeding and clothing them cost a fourtune and it comounds annually. And the really sad part is when times get tight you cant sell them on ebay.(just a joke dont go calling the child abuse hotline)

Really the truth is, if you are picky about what you buy you can call your addiction, "investing or collecting", and these are socialy accepted practices that sound so much better to the ear.
This can allso lead you to making money if get lucky or hit on the right guitar.(buy low sell high)

Just watch out for packrating. Try not to hang on to gear that will not increase in value, or is not something you are going to use. Just think of those times when you could have bid a little more or you just didnt have the cash to buy that sweet thing you had seen at the store or online, all because you have money tied down in gear that sits in your storage place collecting dust from unuse.

And if you ever have 50 guitars and no food........

I'm the wrong person to even respond to this question but I suppose when you have more parts and or guitars than you can use, you at least slow down and become more selective.
You don't have a claw neck you want to part with do you? Why did I even buy that last loaded Sustainer body?
I quess I haven't reached the saturation point yet.

One thing to think about that has been crossing my mind lately is it is a huge liability to own a bunch of guitars. It makes you paranoid about who you invite over and changes your perspective about other people. I have more than I can hide. I yelled at my Son and his friends because they opened the blinds and window in my basement rec-room because I was afraid passers by would see the stack of cases and come and rip me off.

Is this any way to live life?
I wonder at times if it is worth it.
Not that someone at any time could break in and
steal your one amp and one guitar.

Day 9: Busted out of rehab and I'm on the run.

I've acknowledged my addiction and learned to accept things I cannot change. In about 40 mins, I'm driving 3 hours to pick up my latest score. Being the addict that I am, and liking to share, I will post pics upon my return...to feed the other addicts :)

This is a fun, painful--and potentially useful--thread.

I'm not so much addicted to purchasing as I am looking. And not just guitars, but every aspect of the signal chain.

So ...

On the list for the next five years ...

Bareknuckle pickups (Probably Rebel Yells/Irish Tours)
CTS Superpots from RS Guitars
Switchcraft jack

Evidence Audio cords for guitar/rig

Rocktron Intellifex or Intelliverb (found a NOS intellifex supplier recently--expensive, but I LOVE the idea of New Old Stock!)

Upgrade my ADA MP-1 to either the Voodoo Mod or the Mod 4 Mk. II from adadepot.com
Mesa Boogie 20/20
Cryogenic tubes throughout system (the newest thing--freezing tubes supposedly makes them sound better; there's a company in England doing it that Guitarist magazine recently profiled)
ADA Ampulator or ADA MicroCab II
Ashley two-channel parametric eq
SKB six-space roller rack (or maybe eight spaces)
Boss RC-2 looper pedal (new ... very cool)
ISP Decimator pedal

Either a Tone Tubby 2X12
or an Avatar 2X12 with the new Celestion Heritage GT 12-65s

That's several grand worth of stuff. And ... baby number one is on the way in a few weeks. So ... more waiting.

My problem isn't so much quantity as quality ... I want the absolute best. I'm constantly surfing to figure out what the absolute best stuff out there is ... even though I absolutely don't have the talent to justify the bucks. My recent decision to get an F-3000 instead of a Pacer was a step in a healthy direction for me.

I'm actually pretty satisfied with my recent F-3000 purchase. It sounds awesome.

Eventually, I'd like to pick up a custom shop Pacer with a maple neck and a black Stagemaster Custom 1. But those come up so infrequently that it's not really an issue. And by then, who knows what MusicYo will be offering. (A blue Jersey Star would fit the bill nicely ... )

Perhaps the best thing I've ever read on this subject is something Tom Morello from Audioslave mentioned in an article in one of the U.S. guitar mags a while back. He said that he just decided at a certain point to stop buying gear, that he would get his sounds with what he had at that point (his black strat; his hybrid Pacer; his Marshall JCM 800 and a couple of pedals). He said that decision led directly to the creative sounds he gets out of his gear. Anyway, I try to think about that when I'm tempted. The idea of coming up with a better sound with the gear I've already got is appealing to me.

All in all, sounds like we all need a little help . . . :treadmill

This can allso lead you to making money if get lucky or hit on the right guitar.(buy low sell high)

I can only afford that because I don't earn bad and have no wife and kids yet, so all my spare money is invested solely into guitars as of late.

But I'm not at all interested in collecting or reselling them, I'm just looking for a nice set of say, 7 guitars which will stay with me forever. Regardless of brand. And since I only play Strat-like guitars, the choice is rather narrow, Fender, Kramer and potentially a nice Carvin. Absolutely regardless of value, I need the guitars which will do what I want from them. So far, I have three, maybe four if the Focus 4000 I just received (which needs a thorough strip and nice new finish) turns out playing as nice as it looks. This is THE evil metal beast, and the HW is 100% healthy and all original. The Floyd will get new saddles and a pop-in screwless bar and then we'll see how it feels. I'm excited like a little kid, this was a real x-mass present for the 90 pounds UK!!!

As said, as soon as I have found them, then I'm done, that's it.

Sidetrack: my amp I found long time ago, Crate Stealth 50 through a 4x12 100W blue Jensen half-stack.
Got it for a laugable amount of money, all together $550 like new. It fulfills all my needs perfectly, never felt the need for any other amp since I bought it some 7 years ago. I just use a simple delay/reverb in the loop, that's it. I use different wood, bridge and pickup mixtures for different sounds and leave it all "natural" after the guitar, just pure basic sounds of the clean and gain channel.

I gained more insight and "feeling" for the good stuff, so the search won't go for much longer. And I'm quite lucky so far too :)

Duh, that was a whole novel there! Got carried away. My flat looks like a guitar workshop at the moment, 5 axes disassembled, parts of hw everywhere. Total consolidation. Cleaning and small repairs done, switching necks and trems on Strats for testing and combining parts optimally etc. and all into it right now. Might be time for a little break :alien

I can honestly say that for me, it's not about the elusive quest for tone anymore. I'm very pleased with the tones I get from almost all of my gear.
My problem is simply that I find guitars absolutely beautiful. To me, there more like art that you can touch. I love the shapes a colors and the way all the pieces work together to create music. I also love the way they make you feel when you strap one on and hit that first chord.
Is there a cure for my addiction? I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking that an absolute, complete, utter overdose would do the trick. :headbang

MUST IGNORE THE NIGHTSWAN MUST IGNORE THE NIGHTSWAN MUST INGORE THE NIGHTSWAN- it's killin' me.

Hey Tommy, your post exposed the down side of this and it bugs me too. I'm thinkin' all the time about keeping the exposure down so that someone doesn't back a truck up and snatch mine. Also worry that it looks like I have a bunch of disposable income to my peers when one comes into the collection but I scrimp dearly to make it happen. I've got to stop.

If it was a competative thing I'd just smack myself awake and get real. Problem is, I want to get and play every freaking kramer that I see. I'm gonna go with Triple X' idea and pick 4 or 5 keepers and get my head back into rotating 'em through the gig's.....someday....really.....maybe ...........

I may have got lucky, by the way it sounds.
I have a Yamaha rgx-110 that is special. I have played 3 other 110s that did not have the sweet feel of mine. I have picked up top of the line fenders, charvels, Ibenezs, and various other guitars and have not found them to any more playable then my 110. I have played a couple of Rockstrings kramers, granted probely not his best ones, and have gone back to playing my 110. The only guitar I can say felt as good to me was a 6 grand PRS, but I dont have the cash for that!

So I dont know if I just got lucky, or if the 110 has spoiled me or made my picky. But intill I find that rare gem or win the lotto, I will have no problem sticking with what I have.

What to do about addictive guitar buying? Make sure you sell something, anything of any value, before you spend more cash. I sold my wife's xmas present to buy a kramer, but she didn't see the logic I was using and now I have one less axe. Try to use the "helpless against it..." routine, or "maybe I SHOULD pick up heroin and porn again...". We have a limit set in our household where each person can spend a certain amount without being chastised. Anyway, music is the best addiction and the toys that come with it are all part of it. :poke

well, I'll tell you how I have done it... I approach it the same way I approached quitting drinking.... I look but don't touch.... whenever I see something I want... the first thing I do is go check out my bank balance, then I go through all my bills... by that time... I am usually so depressed that I don't want to buy anything...LoL
seriously though... I have somewhere around 25 or 26 guitars... and enough parts to build 5 more... I just made a decision that if it wasn't my holy grail... that I wasn't buying it no matter how good a deal it might be... the Kramer Custom I just purchased was something which was on my list for sometime... and I have waited until they lowered the price enough for me to jump on it.
The other thing is... I made a strict... no more projects until all the current projects are finished...
but I am a little bit different than most guys.... when I buy something... it won't get sold.... I've been there and done that... and I will never do that again.... as for the paranoia... I have 10K of insurance on my guitars..... and I am usually so busy with work... that I usually don't have any house guests.... but when I do... they are people I trust...
The bottom line is... you have to keep things in perspective.... is it something I want or need... and you always have to ask the question... is it something I can afford right now... and then you have to ask yourself... is there any way I can do without it...

James

Heh, I bought 4 guitars and loads of parts since I started this thread :D :D :D

So obviously, I'll have to work on that a bit more. At least I threw all the parts I had laying around onto eBay two days ago, at least something.

I decided to sell all the stuff I have and stay with 5-7 axes afterwards. Hope I'll get there soon, a MusicMan Petrucci and either a Nightswan or a ProAxe are still missing in the collection.

Hello, my name is Bob........ and I'm...... Am I'm a . Kramerholic..

It started out as just a quick thrill..... pick up an axe every now and then..... you know.... heh heh.... no big thing...... But then I...... then I :-x

.... joined the forum.....

I was exposed to just what kind of Kramer Juice there is out in the big bad world..... in the streets...... in the closets...... and yes...... in the alleys and abandoned homes where the worst of us creep and crawl in the never-ending obsession with finding ... the perfect Kramer.

My wife no longer talks to me about this issue..... she senses the obsession, the mind numbing Kontrol that a pointy with an E Plate has on me...... she hears idle chatter about the nanners, and then maybe the beakers...... she has no idea that I put a very generous offer on that classic head rockinger b-plate pacer just....... just 2 weeks ago....the Klines...??..... Ha Ha.... the Klines you say....... please, don't mention them..... they bring pain..... they represent a number of known factory issues..... and a random matchup to find them less likely than a powerball pick.... that I just can't deal ..... just can't deal......... with...... :-x :-x

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :lol :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
Now in all seriousness I must confess that I have accumulated more axes than I can immediately bond with and that is not good. I was not like this before coming here. I am a well adjusted functioning professional who grabs an axe when needed, not on a whim. I will be stepping down, resuming contributions to my retirement accounts, and ripping on the ones that I have acquired. Finishing the project on the bench. Looking for a body for that maple board neck..... eerrrrr. strike that. You will hear me weeping, quietly, in the back of your mind, when the SND '85 'rettas are released and the brothers are celebrating the fundamental richness of a new close-to-grail axe, when a Nightswan hits evilbay with a BIN (any BIN, I want that MF'r damnit :eviltongu ) or a Stagemaster is shill bid to infinity, but I have to get real, get straight, and enjoy the scores and snags of others.........

for a little while anyway :D :D :D :D :D :D

The preceding announcement was crafted for the entertainment value and humor that I wish to share with my forum brothers. Any similarities to a real Krazy MF are unintentional. In addition, all spelling errors are left intentionally, as I am too lazy to spell check at 2 oclock am eastern time.

well first thing is to read some book by the Dalai Lama. LOL

seriously. tho think about it. what if someone gave you all the money in the world? would that make you happy??? i bet you anything it wont. it may help you satisfy some of your pleasures but happiness is different.
so what would you do? go out and buy any guitar that you could get your hands on? so what would that do? you have to realize why you want these guitars so much in the first place.
for me it is to play them and have a good time. i dont want to have more than 4-5 guitars tops and for me that is ALOT. 2-3 is maybe better. right now i have 4 and i am starting another project to make one more. this is the most i have ever had EVER.
i am a project manager and make a considerable amount of money so that really isnt an issue ( im not bragging here)
the thing is that i dont see it making me happier and it takes away from my playing, which is what pumps my nads in the first place. out of the 4 i have the one is gonna sell for sure. ) It is an old 83 maple top Ibanez. its not bad of a guitar, pretty nice, but i dont really play it all that much and my other ones i have sound better. so i have no use for it. let someone else who really will play it have it.

i like having 1-2 guitars and play the shit out of them. having too many takes away from putting mojo in them anyway.

in a few words: THE MAGIC IS LOST when you have too many.

I realized a few months ago that I had more Kramers than I needed and really thought about it. It was troubling, was it need, or ego?....I pondered, tough question, I love my Kramer's. So I came to a temporary answer. I've decided to be responsible and buy some Hamer's Jackson's and charvel's. Then once I feel I have my Kramer impulse under control I'll go from there. ;)

Yeah, this forum doesn't help the Kramer addiction. I luv Lumies. I got my first one, then joined this forum...now I have 10 or 11, and that does not include my "other" brands of basses. I was doing good, had not got anything in 3months, and then boom, XKB-20, XL-8, Stagemaster, all in one month. now I have a Focus 8000 coming. My bank account hurts, and my Visa bill hurts even more.

The only way to cure me is block me from Ebay, I just cannot let a lumie go if its a good deal. I tell myself it is an investment, in a way it is.

What I try to do is tell myself I am not getting another bass unless I get rid of one, and I actually did weed a few out, but now I am to the point I don't want to get rid of any....

Just make it stop.......I must have will power! :guns

Do consider one important thing. Everything guitar you spend money on is resaleable. It's not money down the drain like most other things people spend money on. And in some cases, the guitars are even worth more than you paid for them. So if you are collecting/accumulating and worried about your addiction, at least confine yourself to buying things that you can easily resell if you need to. How many hobbies can you say that about?

In the 70s we used SMF to mean "Sit on my face"

Meaning the chick was hot, gorgious, classy, and clean looking.... Face worthy....

Oh, never mind. I had a senior moment. It was "SOMF".....

:lol

For me, buying nice guitars actually makes happy, like when girls buy shoes or dresses or get their way with pre-nups :D

Kinda like a drug, but the biggest thrill is obviously playing them...and looking at a nice guitar and imagining how it would play...just like when you look at a hot chick and....ok I'll leave the rest to your imagination. :D

Fighting the addiction just means being restrictive, if you play guitar a lot and are passionate about it (and by a lot I mean thats practically all you do) then obviously you are more self deserving of a guitar (you know I deserve to buy myself a new guitar) rather than just having G.A.S....think about if you REALLY need it? Or how badly do you want it, if its so much you cant stop thinking about it you probably should get it, but if its just like 'yeah i like it its ok' maybe you should save your money unless you're rich or something.
